Nate Montana, the son of Joe Montana a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, is set to follow in his father footsteps by committing to play for the University of Notre Dame team, the Fighting Irish. He is a quarterback weighing 185 pounds and is 6 feet, 5 inches tall. Nate, at age 18, will be entering Notre Dame as part of the class of 2008. He played as a third string quarterback at De Salle High School in Concord, California. He was 12 of 19 for 166 yards and one touchdown and in limited action he ran 17 times for 33 yards. Although he did not receive a scholarship to Notre Dame, that is a future possibility. His father said he didn push Nate to choose Notre Dame, but left the decision completely up to him. He was very pleased when Nate did make the choice, however. He does have a tough act to follow because his father is an alumnus of the university. Instead of attending the university on a scholarship, though, Nate is an invited walk-in with the prospect of obtaining a scholarship for the 2009 season. Nate was sidelined during his sophomore season because of a leg injury. He does have an impressive arm. During his senior year he was a back up quarterback. He also directed the scout team offense against the first team defence during his senior year and the team won the California state championship. He says he gained a lot from this experience because he learned the value of working hard to attain his goals. He says it proved to him how much harder he did have to work to become better both in football and in his academics. He didn exactly turn a lot of heads in his senior year, which is why there is very little information available about his ratings and his statistics. Fans are eager to see what Nate can do when he starts the season. Many predict that he will be an even better player than his father was. Some are troubled about the choice saying that the only reason he received the invitation is because of who he is. There is no doubt that all eyes will be upon him both at practices and when he does get a chance to play. This means this year is a test year for Nate in which he has to go all out to prove himself to the coaches. Nate was actually stunned by the invitation saying that he certainly didn expect it. He thought that this season he would be trying to play catch-up from high school. He is elated that Coach Weiss did have such confidence in him and is willing to give him such an important chance. He was planning on spending this season working on his fundamentals and trying to improve so he is really looking forward to September and the opportunity to be one of the students attending Notre Dame. With constant practice there is no doubt his name will become a household one in the world of football.
